After the Legend GT, 'SR king' 12622 Tamil Nadu Express shows off its newly upgraded RPM WAP-7 Locomotive link and rattles the tracks with fury. This is the third time now the 12622 Tamil Nadu Express has been spotted with WAP-7 loco link.


The Tamil Nadu Express was first started on 7 August 1976 by then Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi. Introduced as a tri-weekly, it was the first State named train of the South.

Tamil Nadu Express runs between Chennai and New Delhi. It is considered as the fastest non-Rajadhani Express train. In 1976, it was a tri weekly train, then made four times a week just before the 1982 Asian Games and then converted to a daily train by Madhav Rao Scindia in June 1988 and who added Gwalior to the stoppages. Numbered 12621/12622, this train belongs to the superfast category of Indian Railways.

This train runs via Vijayawada, Warangal, Ballarshah, Nagpur, Itarsi, Bhopal, Jhansi, Gwalior, Agra Cantt and Hazrat Nizamuddin to reach New Delhi station. There is no stop between Vijayawada and Chennai. The non-stop run of 431 km between Vijayawada and Chennai is the longest inter-halt journey for any train other than the Thiruvananthapuram Rajdhani or the Duronto Express Kochuveli Dehradun SF, Kochuveli Amritsar SF and Kerala Sampark Kranti (between Kota and Vododara 525km non stop).

Though the name is Tamil Nadu Express, the train has only one stop in Tamil Nadu i.e., Chennai.


WAP-7 Electric Locomotive:

WAP 7 is a high speed locomotive developed by Chittaranjan Locomotive Works in collaboration with Adtranz. It is capable of hauling trains at speeds ranging between 140 and 160kmph.

The WAP-7 is actually a modified version of the WAG 9 freight locomotive with modified gear ratios and is set to replace the fleet of WAP 4's, the most widely used passenger locomotive today. The process will be a very slow one however, with WAP-4s still being produced and the production of WAP-7's increasing at a slow pace.

The WAP-7 can also haul loads of 24-26 passenger coaches at 140+ km/h per hour. It can deliver 6000 HP with regenerative braking being one of its salient features. The regenerative braking is deployed on down gradients conserving energy to the tune of 30-35 percent. It has an inbuilt microprocessor based fault diagnostic system to make trouble shooting easier.

Currently a 7000 hp version codenamed WAP 7-D with IGBT traction is under development by Chittaranjan Locomotive Works.
